UK Extends Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Nations
British government has placed 11 further nations to its public warning register concerning the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of documented incidents" of methanol contamination.
Only recently, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, following several high-profile incidents like the fatal demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Methanol is a harmful substance commonly utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.
However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities minister Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should know the indicators of methanol contamination.
"While having drinks overseas, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister advised.
"If something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention right away."
