Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Atmosphere

A team of photography enthusiasts in New Zealand have recorded photographs of crimson flashes, counted as the least common atmospheric displays in the world, in which bright red bursts become visible in the sky.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists initially planned to shoot the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the South Island of the country on a night in October, before encountering the unusual spectacle.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their shooting session turned into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer stated.

Upon examining his files for a stellar landscape and discovered he had captured scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he explained. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and various reactions in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. Unlike lightning that aims at the earth, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, producing structures that are similar to columns, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was captured – accidentally – in that year, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Fleeting and Dreamlike Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but an individual had a lucky break. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward one when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence looking at the right part of the heavens and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.

Witnessing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It appears as if you are observing an impossible sight, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to witness.”

Skill-Based and Creative Mastery

Capturing a such an event requires a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, the photographer stated. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

A different team member remarked it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his career. “I could see the galactic band glowing above the distant edge while these massive crimson strands of light moved above a storm far on the horizon,” he explained.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no additional photographs showing crimson flashes and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“It represented a unique instance when you understand you’re witnessing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
